Baby Facts: The Truth about Your Child’s Health from Newborn through Preschool
Ear infections need to be treated with antibiotics. Newborns and infants should be bathed daily. New parents are deluged with advice on how to care for their babies. This book explores common baby health myths–in areas such as feeding, sleeping, toilet training, and illness–to help them separate baby facts from baby fiction.

As a pediatrician, I initially skimmed this book out of curiosity to see if there were any pediatric myths that I innocently believed. Wow, I’m glad I did! I was surprised at how many myths even I believed were true! Reading “BabyFacts” will make me a better pediatrician, mother, and overall “advice giver.” I am now recommending this book not only to my patients, but to my colleagues and friends with young children.

I bought this book to give to sister for her baby shower and ended up buying one for myself and everyone else I know who is having a baby!! The information in this book is invaluable and answers alot of questions that I wanted to ask my pediatrician but forgot/ felt foolish asking. I highly recommend buying this book for either yourself or anyone who has young children!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was refreshing to read such an educational, information-packed book that was written in a light-hearted and at times humorous tone. The “myth/fact” format also helped to make it an easy read. I was really surprised to learn how many myths I have fallen victim to. I would recommend this book to any parent or grandparent (my mom also read it and I find her quoting it to me at times)!

As a mother and grandmother, I totally endorse this book!! I wish that I’d had it when my children were small. Dr. Adesman addresses all the “old wives” tales and current trends in a smart, witty, crisp and humble fashion. (He even admits the myths that he and his pediatrician wife succumbed to while raising their 3 children.) He also points out when you should consult your doctor. My daughter-in-law loves this book as a mother of 2 pre-schoolers. Also, the cover is beautiful!! I will be giving this as a baby shower gift for years to come.

If you want main stream info- here it is. Why waste time and read the “fluff”? Be BETTER informed about the truth. Example: what is REALLY in the baby mattress? Antimony- where will my baby get high levels from?
Really, cover your baby mattresses with BabySafe covers. Better yet- buy an organic mattress. Don’t allow your child to wear/breathe flame retardant chemicals in fabrics. Learn the dangers of fluoride. Learn the dangers of high-frutose-corn syrup….the list is long…but keep an open mind and don’t always believe mainstream thinking- it is not necessarily the truth.
Any little bit you can do to keep harmful things away from your infant and child- will help in the long run. you don’t have to panic and think ALL has to be done… a little at a time. Most importantly- research things on your own and be informed.
Books I would say are MUST haves: Baby Matters (Palmer) and Child Health Guide (Randall Neustaedter). Great from early pregnancy on. Consider also subscribing to Mothering magazine and Kiwi- much better than Parenting and Parents.
