Fetal development

Every pregnant woman wants to know what is happening in her body, how her baby grows and develops, whether there are any dangers on his way. This is provided by a monthly prenatal visits to the doctor and various fetal development diagnostic studies. Ultrasonography is the most informative method of investigation that sought to identify abnormal fetal growth.

Fetus and its relationship with the mother’s body

Fetus is a growing organism, beginning with the ninth week of fetal development until birth. Before the ninth week this organism is called a fetus or embryo. A normal pregnancy lasts 40 weeks plus or minus two weeks. Gynecologists divide these 40 weeks into three terms: I trimester – up to 12 weeks, II – 12-24 weeks, III – from 24 weeks before birth.

Fetus is inextricably linked to the mother’s body, throughout pregnancy there is a system of mother – placenta – fetus operating. Mother’s body provides optimal conditions for fetal development. Mother and fetus collaboration involves nervous, endocrine, immune and other mechanisms. Mother’s body and fetus begin interacting most fully after placenta development, which allows fetus adapting to changing conditions in maternal organism.

Fetal development in the first trimester of pregnancy (up to 12 weeks)

In the end of the fourth week of pregnancy an embryo is implanted in uterus mucous membrane, where primordia of organs and membranes is formed. In the end of the eighth week of pregnancy length of an embryo reaches approximately 3 cm, it is already possible to distinguish head, torso (it is equal to the length of head), rudiments of limbs, eyes, nose, mouth. Microscopic structure of sex glands allows determining sex of the fetus.

In the end of the 12th week fetus reaches a length of 9 cm, weight – 40 g. Limbs are clearly defined, formation of external genitalia begins, x-rays allow seeing the points of ossification in a cartilage skeleton.

Fetal development in the second trimester (12-24 weeks)

During 16th week, the length of fetus reaches about 16 cm, weight – approximately 120 g, sex is clearly visible, skin is thin, smooth, reddish, without subcutaneous fat, face is almost formed, ossification of skull begins. In connection with formation of muscular system, activity of limb movement is growing, there are weak respiratory movements.

In the end of the 20th week fetus reaches a length of 25 cm, weight – 300 g. Movement is so active that mother feels them, and fetal heartbeat can be heard. Skin of fetus, starting with head and face is covered with prenatal hairs and entire body – eldest lubricant, consisting of a mixture of fat-like secretion of sebaceous glands with scales of skin surface layer. The first cal – meconium is formed in the gut. Subcutaneous tissue is formed in the lower abdomen.

In the end of 24th week the length of fetus is 30 cm, weight – 700 g. The internal organs are so mature that sometimes, under appropriate conditions, fetus may be viable for premature birth.

Fetal development in the third trimester of pregnancy (from 24 weeks until birth)

By the 30th week, the length of fetus is about 35 cm, weight – about 1 kg. Fetus looks like an «old man» because of poor development of subcutaneous fat, whole body is covered with prenatal hairs, ears are very soft, nails do not reach fingertips. In girls, large labia do not close small, boys’ testicles are not descended into the scrotum, navel is located closer to the pubis. Fetus is premature and unripe, that is unsustainable, as functions of its internal organs and systems are not perfect. After birth, survival of such fetus is small and is possible only under especially favorable conditions.

On the 34th week fetus has a length of about 40 cm, weight – about 1,6 kg. Fetus is viable, but requires special care conditions.

On 38-40th weeks fetus acquires the characteristics of maturity: its length is 45 cm, weight – about 2,5 kg. «An old man» look is lost due developed subcutaneous tissue, skin becomes pink, navel is located in the usual place. Fetus becomes fully viable.

Fetal development. Signs of fetus maturity

Full-term fetus under adverse conditions of intrauterine development may have signs of immaturity and vice versa, aborted fetus may be born mature, so the concept of preterm and maturity do not always coincide.

Fetal length is an important sign of maturity: not less than 47 cm; and weight should be not less than 2,5 kg. Signs of maturity also include navel position: it should be positioned midway between the sternum and the pubis. Other important factors: state of skin (pink), lack of «senile» atrophy, development of subcutaneous fat, presence of prenatal hairs only on shoulders and upper back, hair condition of hair, nails and other symptoms.

With a weight of 4 to 5 kg fetus is consirered large, more than 5 kg – giant. Weight increase may be associated with features of mother’s nutrition, hereditary factors, number of births, mother’s illness (for example, diabetes often causes a large fetus), etc. A newborn, which has great weight must be carefully examined to avoid possible diseases.

Balanced diet, locomotor activity, continuous monitoring of fetal condition by a women’s clinic doctor are a guarantee of a full-term healthy baby birth.

Why Should I Breastfeed?

Deciding whether to breastfeed or formula feed? This is likely one of the first and most important decisions many first-time parents will make. Consider this: breast milk is the best thing you can provide for your baby to nurture his growth and development. It is the most self-less thing
you can do for your baby and is vital to his health.

Benefits of Breastfeeding vs. Bottle Feeding

How babies benefit from breastfeeding:

Breast milk contains high levels of nutrients and antibodies that protect babies from numerous illnesses and diseases such as: type 1 diabetes, ear infections, and respiratory problems to name a few. In addition to fighting off infection, babies have a lower chance of digestive problems as breast milk is more easily digested than formula. Breastfeeding also reduces colic, gas, and spit up since less air is ingested.

How mom benefits from breastfeeding:

Looking forward to getting back into those pre-pregnancy jeans? Breastfeeding burns hundreds of calories as your body produces breast milk.

Warming milk is not necessary since breast milk is always the perfect temperature and there is no prep time. Your milk is always in stock since your body continues to produce it.

Breastfeeding reduces postpartum bleeding and can lower levels of stress. What’s more, it brings you and your baby closer. There is no stronger bond between a mother and her baby than that what comes from nursing.

Best of all, it’s free! You can spend approximately $60 to $200 on formula every month, but breast milk comes at no cost.

What Will I Need for Breastfeeding?

If you choose to breastfeed exclusively, there really isn’t much you will need. There are some optional supplies you may want to make breastfeeding easier. These items include: nursing pads, nursing bras and/or tops, lanolin-based cream, nursing pillow, breast pump, and breast milk storage containers.

Effectively Childproofing Your Home

Every book says to begin babyproofing when your baby is a couple of weeks old, but very few really begin to take the steps until their babies become mobile. However, an accident can take only a matter of seconds. Babyproofing begins from the second you bring your baby home because it is
ensuring your baby is safe at all times from everything. It goes way above and beyond outlet covers and drawer latches.

When you first bring your baby home, figure out what hazards might be posed to your baby. Perhaps it is getting a family pet used to the newest member of the family. Always supervise interaction between your baby and your pet because a cat can scratch or a dog can bite at a moment’s notice. Pay particular attention to fur. A baby can suffocate on a furball, choke on hair they attempt to eat, or lose circulation from hair getting tightened around a finger or toe. Make sure to keep all fur and debris away from your baby at all times. These are your first babyproofing steps.

Ensure your crib is safe. This means making sure the mobile can’t be accessed by the baby, check your crib for recalls, ensure if there’s a dropside that it isn’t defective in any way because a faulty crib can result in injury or death to your baby. The most important thing you can do is to ensure your baby can’t grab onto curtains or blind strings because a baby can get hung up and be strangulated by these items while you think they are sleeping peacefully.

Fun Ways to Document Your Child’s Growth

Fun ways to document your child’s growth – Everyone that has kids or nieces and nephews knows how fast they grow. You could buy a growth chart but they are kind of boring. You can mark directly on the wall but you won’t be able to take the wall with you if you ever move. After thinking
and thinking on what I could do to document my own child’s growth beyond the baby book and growth charts I came up with a couple ideas.

The easiest and smallest way to document growth is to simply make projects out of tracing their hands and feet or painting their hands and feet and putting them on something. I do tons of these projects but got to thinking that they don’t really show how tall my daughter is getting.

The first idea I have is quiet simple. With a big roll of plain white butcher paper roll it out until your child can lie completely on the paper. Trace around your child and have them color the paper in. Now you can hang it in your favorite room or simply let it hang on their wall in their bedroom.

For a more abstract design, take the silhouette of your child outside and tape it to a piece of scrap plywood. Fill up water balloons with home made paint or watered down paint from the store. Give your child the balloons with the instructions to throw them at their silhouette. Kids will love this idea!!! Let it dry out in the sun before hanging it on your walls.

For decorations for the outdoors, instead of paper have your child lie down on a sheet of plywood and trace around them. Make sure and tell them to be still so they don’t get splinters. Have them lay with their hands and arms up, down, and to the sides and any other way they can lay.

Next use a jigsaw to cut out the drawing.

Using a belt sander, or hand sander although it will take more work and more time, sand down the cut edges.

Paint the plywood silhouette any way you want it. You can even put one of your child’s shirts on it if you want.

Now display it in your front yard, climbing your fence, in the garden, sitting in a tree, anywhere you want it.

This also makes a great gift for grandparents to add to their yards.

Which is Better: Bottle Feeding vs. Breast Feeding

Is There a Major Dfference in Babies Bottlefed Compared to Breastfed Babies?

Breastfeeding your baby is what nature intended for us, this much is true, just look at our make up. Breasts believe it or not, were not made just for gawking at. The breast is called the mammary gland. Within the mammary gland there is a network of branching ducts which extend from
lobules. The lobules are what produce milk with the hormonal changes in pregnancy and birth. If however you make the decision to bottle feed, there are many different formulas available to feed your child ,and they definitely won’t lack nutrition. There are even special formulas for special needs of your baby. Let’s say your baby is iron deficient, the use of iron enriched formula is usually recommended for use in the first year. There are the colicky babies, and sometimes the use of soy based formula will cut down on their apparent discomfort, because sometimes its a matter of them being lactose intolerant, so cow milk based formulas would be no good for these babies. There is formula made specifically for preemie babies, who need added nutrition for their tiny bodies struggling to catch up. These formulas contain higher calories, more minerals, vitamins, and protein.

Things to Bring when Traveling with Babies on Planes

Everyone knows that it is not easy to travel with a baby. Not only are you packing for yourself, but there are things that you just cannot forget for the baby. You don’t want to bring too much but there are a few necessities.

First of all, I would make sure I have a few bottles and formula. That is number one on the list. Even if you are breastfeeding, you just never know if you will be able to do that on a plane. You may not have the privacy to do it. You definitely want to make sure that the baby eats. I
would not go anywhere without formula. I would also make sure that I have a few bottles of water to mix the formula with. You always want your baby to have filtered water, so I wouldn’t depend on getting it from the bathroom sink on the plane. You don’t know the history of where that water comes from.

I would definitely bring a diaper bag filled with diapers and plenty of clothes. This is just as important as bringing the bottles and formula. Depending how old the baby is and how long the trip is, you want to make sure you never run out of diapers. I would also bring a changing pad. You don’t just want to put the baby down anywhere. Even if the restrooms have changing stations, usually they are not too clean. You are up in the air and you need to make sure you have everything you need. Clothes are a must in case the baby wets the pants or dress that she or he is in. I would also make sure I had any ointment cream that I use when I change diapers. You can’t afford to forget that either. I would say that these are the most essential things.

If you still have room in the diaper bag, there are more things that wouldn’t hurt for you to bring along. One is the baby’s nail clipper. Even if you have already trimmed the nails, there could always be another one sticking out and ready to come off. Hotels may not carry a lot of baby supplies, so you may want to bring along shampoo and soap. (especially if you prefer certain brands) Lastly, I would bring one or two toys. Don’t depend on your baby sleeping throughout the entire trip. You don’t want to bring noisy things that could bother other passengers though.

Must Know Tips for Throwing a Children’s Halloween Party

Start your planning a few weeks in advance so you have time to send out invitations and allow the guest’s time to RSVP. Think about the date and time you would like to have the party. If Halloween is on a weekday, consider a weekend party for children who are in school. Maybe the actual
day Halloween falls on won’t work because too many of the invited guests plan on going trick-or-treating. The time of day is important, too. Make it late enough for the people who work but not too late for those who get up early. Decide if you plan on serving a meal and make sure you have plenty of parking.

You can make simple or elaborate decorations but keep in mind it is a children’s party. You can buy fake cobwebs, plastic skulls and rats, and make gravestones from gray and black construction paper. Use black and orange balloons or streamers and set out some pumpkins. Have an adult in charge of the music and play spooky background music to help set the mood for the party.

Think of lots of fun activities the children can do at the party. There are many different kinds of relays like mummy wrapping, they can play pin the tail on the donkey type of games with pumpkin cutouts, and they can even play hot potato with a mini pumpkin. It is good to come up with several games to ensure the kids stay entertained.

If your games aren’t played for candy, consider making up treat bags with various candies that the children can take home with them.

You can set out some craft materials for the children to make their own masks and even orange play dough can be fun for a younger crowd.

Whether all the games are played and the party is still going or the children need a break, dim the lights get out a scary story and sit the kids down for some ghostly tales. Or make a station for the tragic Sam story and set up spaghetti, peeled grapes, peeled tomatoes and baby carrots and have the children guess what body parts they are supposed to be.

Traveling with Baby: What You Need to Pack

Top 5 Necessities for a Stress Free Airplane Trip

Vacations with babies can be both fun and stressful. Parents do not like to leave their little ones with babysitters when vacationing, so being a great parent we bring them along with us. Travel by airplane can be difficult enough at times, without fear that a crying baby will upset other
passengers. So what can us as parents pack for our babies to keep them happy during our flight? Here are a list of must have items to consider packing for your baby if you want a pleasurable flight.

One – Toys can bring great pleasure to a baby. A favorite stuffed animal that lights up can hold a babies attention for quite some time. Toy cell phones that have real sounds can keep their attention also.

Two – Be sure to bring plenty of food for your baby. Babies tend to eat more frequent than adults do. They can become fussy and cranky if they get hungry enough. If your baby is old enough for finger foods bring that along as a treat for him or her to snack on during the flight. Bring plenty of formula for feeding, and juice for quenching thirst when formula just is not cutting it.

Three – Diapers and diaper wipes are necessary to bring. No baby wants to have a dirty diaper during a four or more hour airplane ride. Diaper wipes are also good to clean up any unexpected mess your baby may make during the flight.

Four – Be sure to pack a blanket for your little one. Airplanes can become cold at times and he or she will want a little extra warmth.

Five – If your baby is teething pack a teething ring. You may also consider bringing along baby orajel or baby anbesol to relieve the pain from teething.

Six – Bring plenty of outfits for your baby. Babies have accidents from leaky diapers and dropping or spitting their food out.

Seven – Medical insurance information should be packed as well. Babies can become sick at any given moment. You will need your insurance information for that unexpected doctor visit.

Traveling with your baby does not have to be a stressful time for you or your baby. Taking simple steps to ensure a safe and happy plane ride is all it will take. Your baby and the passengers aboard the airplane will thank you for it later.

Time Saving Times Tips for Parents with New Babies

When Each Moment is Once in a Lifetime..

Every week your baby is changing and growing so much! Other things can wait–its your sweetheart that needs your time. But we don’t want our homes and selves to explode into a toxic mess, so we have some tried and true shortcuts so you can spend more time watching that baby nap!

Cook ahead. Make extra leftovers and freeze them. Its nice to have a healthy meal even on meltdown days when you wouldn’t have time for anything

Of course, it is impossible as a mom to not do many things at once, but whenever you can just try to finish each item before starting a next.

Baths: OH, that new baby smell! Bathing your baby every day is fun, when short on time before they are crawling, you can easily skip days depending on how messy they get at mealtimes and such. Barring a major spill or accident, most newborns stay pretty clean!

How to Decide on an Appropriate Bed Time for Your Child

Many parents find themselves at a loss when it comes to determining what time their child should go to bed. It does seem that everyone has a different opinion on this. If you are a mother, you may find that your mother and your best friend have different thoughts on when your children should go to bed. No matter what, the goal is to make sure that your children are getting enough rest so that they can thrive.

Before you can figure out the bedtime schedule though, you first have to determine just how much sleep your child needs. The amount of time a child needs for sleep is based on his or her age. A baby between newborn and three months of age needs about fourteen to eighteen hours of sleep. A baby that is between three months and six months of age should have anywhere between fourteen hours and sixteen hours of sleep. Twelve to fourteen hours of sleep is required for children between six months to two years old. Then there are the toddlers between two and five years old who must have ten to twelve hours of sleep.

Now that you have determined the amount of time your child needs for adequate sleep you can calculate when bedtime should be. Start by figuring out what time the child needs to wake up in the morning. If you have to get the child up for daycare or preschool, you need to figure out what time you have to wake him or her up in order to leave on time. From there, you will want to count backwards. This will give you the time that your child needs to be in bed each night.

You may find that the bedtime schedule needs to be adjusted a little. This is natural because each child is different. If you begin to find that your child has a very hard time waking up in the morning or throws a lot of tantrums, you may need to adjust the bedtime again. Do not be discouraged if it takes you a couple of weeks to get the exact recipe down for the perfect bedtime schedule, as this is natural. Once you figure out exactly how much sleep your individual child needs, you will all be much happier.

As a toddler bed time will generally be earlier, however as your child ages you will find that he or she will need less sleep. An indicator of this will be waking up extra early in the morning on a consistent basis. When this happens you have two options. You can either start your day earlier than normal or you can make bedtime a little bit later at night. If your child is waking up a half hour early each morning then you will want to put him other to bed a half hour later to bring balance.

Now that you know what time bedtime should be you can finally have a little time to yourself at night and wake up in the mornings with a child that is refreshed and happy to start the day.
